Why ODT files are hard to corrupt properly

OpenDocument Text is a ZIP package containing content.xml, styles.xml and a manifest. LibreOffice is notably tolerant of damaged ODF files and will often reconstruct a document from whatever parts it can still read, so partial damage rarely produces a genuinely broken file.

What this tool destroys

  • The mimetype entry. ODF requires an uncompressed mimetype entry as the first item in the archive. Destroying it breaks format detection immediately.
  • content.xml and styles.xml. The local file headers for the document body and its stylesheet are overwritten.
  • META-INF/manifest.xml. The manifest listing every part in the package is destroyed along with the central directory.
  • The EOCD record. Without the end-of-central-directory record the file is no longer a ZIP archive at all.

What you will see afterwards

ApplicationBehaviour
LibreOffice Writer"The file is corrupt and therefore cannot be opened." Repair produces nothing.
OpenOfficeReports a general input/output error on the document.
Microsoft WordRefuses the ODF import filter.
Google DocsImport fails with an unsupported-file message.

Common reasons people do this

  • Testing an ODF import path in a document management system.
  • Verifying a converter that handles OpenDocument input fails cleanly.
  • Producing damaged ODF samples for a public-sector document workflow test.
  • Demonstrating package-level corruption in an open standards workshop.

How to corrupt a ODT file

  1. Drop your .odt file onto the box above, or click to browse.
  2. Leave the level on Standard unless you want partial damage (Light) or need to defeat recovery software (Heavy).
  3. Press Corrupt file. Processing happens on your device, so it finishes almost immediately.
  4. Download the result. It keeps the original filename and byte length by default.

ODT FAQ

Why is ODT harder to break than DOCX?

LibreOffice tries harder to recover. It will happily rebuild a document from a partially readable archive, so anything short of destroying the container tends to still open.

Does it work on flat ODF (.fodt) files?

Yes, though flat ODF is a single XML file rather than a package, so it is handled with the text profile instead.

Will LibreOffice offer document recovery?

It may prompt, but recovery fails at Standard level and above because the manifest and central directory are both gone.

Are ODS and ODP handled the same way?

Yes. They share the ODF package format. See the ODS and ODP tools.
