Why audio files are hard to corrupt properly

MP3 is a stream of independently decodable frames, which is why a damaged MP3 often still plays with a burst of noise. Making one genuinely unplayable means destroying the ID3 tag and the frame sync words that decoders lock onto.

What this tool destroys

  • ID3 tags. The tag block at the start of the file (title, artist, artwork) is destroyed.
  • Frame sync words. The 0xFFFB-family sync patterns marking each MPEG frame are overwritten, so decoders never lock on.
  • WAV and FLAC. RIFF chunk headers, or the FLAC stream marker and STREAMINFO block, are targeted instead.
  • Audio payload. Entropy is scattered through the encoded audio data itself.

What you will see afterwards

ApplicationBehaviour
iTunes / Apple MusicRefuses to import or add the file to the library.
Windows Media Player"Windows Media Player cannot play the file."
VLCProduces silence or refuses to open the stream.
Music appsThe track shows no duration, artist or artwork.

Common reasons people do this

  • Testing that a podcast or music upload service validates audio properly.
  • Verifying a transcoding worker reports errors rather than producing silent output.
  • Generating malformed audio for an automated test suite.
  • Demonstrating audio file recovery in a training context.

How to corrupt a audio file

  1. Drop your .mp3 file onto the box above, or click to browse.
  2. Leave the level on Standard unless you want partial damage (Light) or need to defeat recovery software (Heavy).
  3. Press Corrupt file. Processing happens on your device, so it finishes almost immediately.
  4. Download the result. It keeps the original filename and byte length by default.

Audio FAQ

Will the track still play as noise?

At Light level, sometimes. At Standard and above the frame sync words are destroyed, so decoders never lock on and nothing plays at all.

Does artwork and metadata survive?

No. ID3 tags sit at the start of the file, inside the header region that is overwritten.

Which formats have dedicated handling?

MP3, WAV, FLAC and the MP4 audio family (M4A, AAC). Others fall back to the generic binary profile.

Is the audio uploaded anywhere?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser, nothing is transmitted, logged or stored.
