Why PowerPoint files are hard to corrupt properly

Slide decks are among the largest Office files people work with, and like Word and Excel they are ZIP packages underneath. Every slide, image and embedded font is a separate entry. Corrupting a deck convincingly means destroying the package index rather than nibbling at individual slides.

What this tool destroys

  • Package structure. Local file headers, the central directory and the EOCD record of the presentation package are all destroyed.
  • Slide parts. The ppt/slides/ entries lose their headers along with everything else in the archive.
  • Embedded media. Images, audio and video live inside the same container, so they become unreachable too.
  • Legacy .ppt. Binary PowerPoint files are handled through their OLE compound-document header.

What you will see afterwards

ApplicationBehaviour
Microsoft PowerPoint"PowerPoint found a problem with content in presentation.pptx." Repair then fails.
Google SlidesImport is rejected as an unsupported or damaged file.
KeynoteRefuses to import the presentation.
Email attachmentAttaches and sends normally at the correct size; it only fails when opened.

Common reasons people do this

  • Testing a learning-management or intranet system that accepts slide decks.
  • Verifying a presentation conversion service degrades gracefully.
  • Creating a damaged sample deck for a disaster-recovery walkthrough.
  • Checking antivirus and DLP behaviour on malformed Office packages.

How to corrupt a PowerPoint file

  1. Drop your .pptx file onto the box above, or click to browse.
  2. Leave the level on Standard unless you want partial damage (Light) or need to defeat recovery software (Heavy).
  3. Press Corrupt file. Processing happens on your device, so it finishes almost immediately.
  4. Download the result. It keeps the original filename and byte length by default.

PowerPoint FAQ

Will PowerPoint repair the deck?

No. At Standard level and above the archive index is gone, so PowerPoint's repair routine has nothing to enumerate.

Can I corrupt just one slide?

Not directly, the tool works at the container level rather than editing slide XML. Light level leaves more of the payload intact, which sometimes produces partial rendering before failure.

Does the file keep its thumbnail?

No. The cached thumbnail lives inside the package and is destroyed with everything else, so a generic icon is shown.

Are embedded videos affected?

Yes. Anything embedded in the deck is stored inside the same ZIP container and becomes unreachable.
