Почему файлы PDF трудно испортить как следует
A PDF is not flat text. It is an object graph held together by a cross-reference table at the end of the file. That is why flipping a few random bytes fails on PDFs: Acrobat and most browsers rebuild a damaged xref automatically and open the document anyway.
Что разрушает этот инструмент
- The %PDF- header. The first bytes declare the format and version. Overwriting them means the file is no longer recognised as a PDF at all.
- Every xref section. Each
xreftable andstartxrefoffset is destroyed, so a reader cannot locate a single object in the document. - The trailer and %%EOF. The trailer dictionary and end-of-file marker are overwritten, which defeats the reconstruction Acrobat attempts on damaged files.
- The object streams. Entropy is scattered through the compressed content streams, so even a hand-rebuilt xref points at unusable data.

Вопросы о PDF
Will the corrupted PDF still show the correct file size?
Yes. The output is byte-for-byte the same length as the original and keeps the same filename and .pdf extension. A file manager, email client or upload form sees nothing unusual. It simply refuses to open.
Can Adobe Acrobat repair it?
Not at Standard level or above. Acrobat repairs a PDF by rescanning it for object definitions when the xref is damaged. Because the header, every xref section, the trailer and the object streams are all destroyed, there is nothing left to rescan.
Does it work on password-protected PDFs?
Yes. Encryption applies to the content streams, but the structural landmarks we target sit outside the encrypted payload, so the result is the same.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser using the File and Web Crypto APIs. The document never leaves your device, which means it also works offline and is safe for confidential material.
